Smart Movement—Why Your Current Workout Might Be Your Biggest Mistake
Most people believe that to lose weight, you must “burn” it off with hours of intense cardio or heavy gym sessions. If you are already tired and stressed, pushing your body even harder might actually backfire.

In my coaching, I see this often: people work out like crazy, but their stomach doesn’t move. This happens because fat burning is controlled by hormones, not just calories. If you do the wrong exercise for your body type, you could be spiking the very hormones that store fat!
Here is how to move smartly based on your body type:
1. The Adrenal Type (Lower the Intensity)
- The Problem: If you have an Adrenal shape, your stress hormone (Cortisol) is already high. If you do high-intensity interval training (HIIT) or heavy running, your body perceives it as “more stress” and holds onto belly fat for protection.
- The Goal: Focus on low-stress movement. If you do this, your body feels safe enough to lower cortisol and start burning fat.
- The Practical Hack: Stick to long, brisk walks (40-60 minutes) or gentle yoga. If you find it hard to make time for a long walk, try two 20-minute walks—one in the morning and one after dinner. It’s about calming the system, not exhausting it.
2. The Liver & Thyroid Types (The Recovery Rule)
- The Problem: These types often have a slow metabolism. While intense exercise can help, many people over-train and don’t give their body time to heal. Fat burning actually happens during sleep after a workout, not just during the workout itself.
- The Goal: Focus on High Intensity but High Recovery. If you do short bursts of intense exercise followed by plenty of rest, you trigger “Growth Hormone,” which is a powerful fat burner.
- The Practical Hack: Instead of an hour of moderate jogging, try 15-20 minutes of “burst” exercise (like fast walking or bodyweight squats) only 2 or 3 times a week. The key is to rest for at least 48 hours between sessions so your liver and metabolism can recover.
3. The Ovary Type (Steady Flow)
- The Problem: This type deals with estrogen imbalance, which can cause fluid retention and stubborn lower-body fat.
- The Goal: Focus on total-body movements that improve circulation.
- The Practical Hack: Aerobic dance, swimming, or brisk walking are excellent. If you feel too tired during your cycle, don’t force a heavy workout—switch to a slow stretch or a leisurely walk until your energy returns.
Common Exercise Rules for Everyone:
- The Sleep Rule: If you didn’t sleep well last night, skip the heavy workout today. If you do a hard workout on 5 hours of sleep, you will likely spike your stress hormones and gain weight.
- The “Feel Good” Test: You should feel energetic after a workout, not completely wiped out. If you feel like you need a 3-hour nap after the gym, your workout was too intense for your current health level.
- Practical Hack for Busy Days: On days when you are too busy to “exercise,” just focus on being active. Take the stairs, walk while talking on the phone, or do 5 minutes of stretching before bed. It all counts!
The Bottom Line: Exercise is a “trigger” for hormones. If you match the trigger to your body type, the fat will start to move. If you fight your body, it will fight you back.
